Oud (Agarwood)

Oud is the fragrant resin produced by Aquilaria trees when they are infected by a specific mould. Used in perfumery for centuries, it ranges from sweet, leather-like, and balsamic to intensely smoky, animalic, and medicinal. Real oud oil is among the most expensive raw materials in the perfume industry.

Also called: agarwood · oudh · aoud · agar

What oud is

Oud (also spelled oudh or aoud; English: agarwood) is the dark, resinous heartwood produced inside Aquilaria trees when the tree is naturally infected by a particular mould. The tree, defending itself, produces a thick fragrant resin that saturates the wood. That resin — distilled into oil or used directly as wood chips — is one of the most prized raw materials in fragrance history.

Real, distilled oud oil sells for tens of thousands of rupees per gram. For perspective, fine oud commands a price-per-weight comparable to some of the most expensive natural materials in perfumery.

What oud smells like

There is no single oud profile. The scent of oud depends heavily on the tree’s region of origin, the age of the resin, and the distillation method. Common descriptors fall on a wide spectrum:

  • Sweet, balsamic, honey-like — younger Cambodian and Indonesian ouds.
  • Leather-and-tobacco — Hindi (Indian) ouds, often the most polarizing.
  • Smoky, woody, intensely resinous — older or heavier Hindi and Burmese ouds.
  • Medicinal, barnyard-like, animalic — fresh or unaged Hindi ouds; an acquired taste.
  • Clean, dry, woody — many synthetic ouds engineered for the modern luxury market.

In modern perfumery, especially in Arabian houses, most “oud” fragrances use a blend of synthetic oud accords supplemented with small amounts of natural oud. This is what makes great-smelling oud fragrances accessible at sub-₹5,000 prices in India today.

Oud in Indian and Arabian perfumery

Oud is the cornerstone of Arabian perfumery, and it has a long history in the Indian subcontinent — the Hindi style of oud distillation has shaped Middle Eastern oud preferences for centuries. Many of the fragrances on Valley Fragrances’ oud collection are built around oud accords paired with rose, saffron, leather, or amber.

Notable oud-led fragrances include releases from Lattafa, Afnan, Armaf, Maison Alhambra, Rasasi, and Al Haramain. These houses have built their reputations partly on producing accessible, well-formulated oud fragrances at price points the luxury sector cannot match.

Real oud vs synthetic oud — what to expect at this price

Be candid about expectations: a 100ml bottle of perfume sold for ₹2,000 does not contain natural oud oil. It contains a synthetic oud accord — a careful chemical reconstruction of the oud profile, often complemented with small amounts of real oud absolutes for warmth and depth. This is the standard in modern fragrance, including in many luxury designer ouds.

Real, neat oud oil is sold in fractional-millilitre vials at four-digit and five-digit rupee prices. It is a separate category from “oud perfumes.”

The synthetic accord route is not a flaw — modern aromachemistry has produced oud reconstructions that are unmistakably “oud” in character. The fragrances perform like the real thing for the wearer’s purposes. The price reflects the materials.

How to wear oud

  • Less is more. One spray of a strong oud is often the right dose. Two or three is appropriate for cool evenings; one is enough for daytime.
  • Layer with rose or saffron. Oud pairs naturally with rose (oud + rose is the classic Arabian combination) and saffron.
  • Cooler weather. Heavy oud fragrances can read as suffocating in Indian summer. Reserve them for evenings, winter, and special occasions.
